Wow, My Windows Vista Self-Destructed

I was running a routine CHKDSK on my laptop last week and according to the Vista there were some files that required moving. So, Vista moved them around for me to “solve the problem” but instead of optimizing my laptop, it self-destructed by moving BOOT records to weird places which means that my computer can’t boot up anymore!

I’m Thinking of Voluntaring for New Venture Pathways

Today, I went to the group meeting for New Venture Pathways. They are funded by CBET under the University of Waterloo’s Enterprise initiative. New Venture Pathways provide resources and tools for aspiring or existing entrepreneurs, such as local listings of seminars or events related to starting your own business.

The meeting went pretty well and the work involved seems interesting. I’m thinking of helping out in the technology area of the group (website, database etc…) and the financial area, so I’ll be (hopefully) gaining lots of experience in those areas. Joining NVP is also a great way to network with ‘key’ people :)

Cheers,

Great Explanation on Poverty Today

I go on TED.com while I eat sometimes. It’s a great place to listen to the greatest minds on our planet. The topics range from Technology, Economics, Design (hence, the name TED).

Today, I saw an incredible presentation from a doctor/researcher named Hans Rosling. He used the data published by the United Nations to see (graphically) the patterns of poverty, the economic performance and health of countries. The software he had used was absolutely amazing (as was his entire presentation). You can see a picture below:

He explained that we are focusing too much on the health issues of developing countries, but obviously he can explain it much better than I can so here’s his presentation below:

Urgency vs Philanthropy

Just a random thought I had that I think I would share with you. It’s about philanthropy.

I don’t remember when or where I saw this, but it was a video of an experiment to determine what was the relationship between urgency and philanthropy. The conclusion was that people would stop and help out a stranger if he/she wasn’t in a rush. However, they wouldn’t do so if they were. This was true in my case today.

Apple Fanboys on Digg

Digg!

I’m a daily user of Digg.com and it’s just pure awesome. If you haven’t heard already (if you are a techy and haven’t heard of Digg then shame on you!) Digg is a social bookmarking website that allows users to share links to interesting stuff on the internet.

While I was surfing on Digg the other day, I noticed the top stories were composed of mostly stories about Apple.

I’m Sacrificing Open Bar for Business Plan Writing?

In order to better prepare in starting up my advergaming agency for UW’s “special” Enterprise co-op option, I am willing to work long hours and neglect the Open Bar that everyone seems to be attending…

Velocity – The UW Student Residence for Undergraduate Entrepreneurs

I was pretty amazed to see this on the bulletin board (the physical one and not the digital one, silly) the other day.

student residence for entrepreneurs!

It’s a brand new student residence dedicated for University of Waterloo students who wish to start their own businesses on campus. The poster and website don’t explain a whole lot, but here is the gist of it…

Updated ‘About Me’ and ‘Vision’ Pages

As the title indicates, I have updated the About Me and Vision pages.  Go take a look!

I am still considering whether I should put up some of my business ideas on my Ideas page. I will most probably do it, but it will take a while to upload them so stay tuned.

So…CUTC 2008 Pretty Much Sucked

CUTC2008 crap like bird crap

My apologies to my peers who were volunteers at the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference ’08, but the conference was really really bad. The atmosphere of the event felt very “last minute.” The delegates were rude, clique-y and anti-social. Presenters, who are the main attractions and contributors to the conference, were only given t-shirts as prizes. This made me feel both embarrassed and a bit ticked off. Also, the TechExpo blew too. It was suppose to showcase emerging technologies, but instead was an open-floor for companies to promote themselves or recruit undergrads.

Well, that was my one minute rant. Any longer might be considered to be offensive (not that it hasn’t ticked off the volunteers already.

A t-shirt as a prize? Wow, I want to be a guest speaker for this event again!
