Speed Networking for Entrepreneurs at CBET – March 4, 4:30pm – 6:30pm

Anyone interested in going?

Here’s the email I got from Jenn Zehr (from UW):

You and your team are invited to attend an exciting networking event
with an accelerated twist! Speed Networking is designed to give you a quick and entertaining opportunity to introduce yourself and pitch your business idea to other young entrepreneurs. The finalists for the CBET Entrepreneurship Challenge will be announced at this event. Final presentations will take place March 14, 2008 at CBET.

Benefits of Speed Networking
- Make more business contacts in one night than most make in a month
- Perfect your “60 Second” pitch
- Face-to-face networking
- Fun and fast paced
- Great for new entrepreneurs

Pizza and refreshments will be served. RSVP by March 4, 2008, 12 noon. ** Because this event requires specific pre-arrangements I ask that
you RVSP by 12 noon. If you do not register by this time, we may not
be able to accommodate you and your team.

CBET Entrepreneurship Challenge – Speed Networking for Entrepreneurs
When: Tuesday March 4, 2008
Time: 4:30 – 6:30pm
Location: CBET

RSVP required by March 4, 12 noon.
How It WorksWith all participants seated in pairs, the Speed Networking sessions
will commence. During each fast paced session, participants will be
able to network face-to-face. After the end of each session,
participants will quickly alternate their seating arrangements to pair
up with their next networking opportunity. This process will continue until all participants have interacted with each other.

In just a few minutes, participants will share business cards, history and offer new contacts with valuable information about their business. For example:

? Who do you know that might need their services?
? How might each company do business with one another?
? Can you introduce them to anyone who can help them?

I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday! When you RSVP please mention any dietary restrictions you may have.

Enjoy the weekend.

My advergaming company has been approved by the University of Waterloo Enterprise Services!

Today, I did a 40+ min presentation in front of a panel of 4 judges for the Enterprise co-op option, which assists UW students with their startups. The option was started in 1999 and only around 50 applicants has been approved.

Now, I’m one of them :D

The presentation went really smoothly and I felt like I’ve expressed my passion and enthusiasm for my venture pretty well. Two of the judges are also involved with the Start Your Own Business Summer Program, so I think I have a pretty good chance on getting a government grant for my business in the summer as well!

The judges were also very helpful in informing me how big transactions in the marketing world are made. There are several challenges that they have brought up that I must think thoroughly over, but what a great experience it was presenting my business!

W00t!!!

Leisure time? What’s that?

You know you are deep into your business when your so-called ‘leisure time’ is completely consumed by work.

Basically, I run two different profiles on my web browser (Firefox). One is for personal usages which contain bookmarks for school, digg.com, some technology-news sites and some fun plugins. The other one is for business usages and contains bookmarks to VC websites, business development websites, industry websites, prospect websites and some business plugins.

More and more have I been using the business profile. Now, as I have just noticed, I never ever login to the other profile anymore…

It’s time to do some deleting…

Birthday Miracles – I’m now 21 years old! (and still alive)

Holy moly how time flies! Today, I turn 21!

People say you’re at your best around your 20′s and it’s during this time that you have the best time of your life, and I can’t disagree!

Just now, I was waken up by a phone call by CBC for their interest in my advergaming idea! They are asking for an on-site presentation whenever I am ready. This is the first step in generating my first sale EVER, and what a way to start your birthday!

[I just noticed how many exclamation marks I have put down so far...I'll stop now...]

It’s funny because last year for my 20th birthday, I had seen my first shooting star. My birthdays so far have been really really good! (oops, that’s an exclamation mark again)

And I had a perfect night with my girlfriend yesterday. Great restaurant, great food, great environment. We were even so lucky that we got a special booth in the restaurant! (that’s an upside down ‘i’, and not an exclamation mark)

I wonder what my 22nd birthday will bring :)

Google Webmaster Tools Helps You Reach Google’s First Page Results

You are probably wondering, “What the hell are “First Page Results”? Simply put, when you search for keywords from Google (or any search engine) the websites that show up on the first page always get high incoming traffic. A lot more people visit the websites listed on the first page compared to sites listed on later pages. So, you always try to have your website in the top 10 ranking for your keywords.

The keywords for my website are my name,“Peter Kao” and “Undergrad Entrepreneur.”

After doing some configurations with Google Webmaster Tools the search rankings for my website immediately shot-up.

I came from being on the second page for the keywords “Peter Kao” to the first page. Now, this may seem silly since this blog is my blog. However, you’d be surprised how many Peter Kao wannabe’s are out there. What a bunch of phonies eh?

Also, now I’m ranked third (not as in third page, but third result!!) for keywords, “Undergrad Entrepreneur.”

But if you do a search with “Undergraduate Entrepreneur” my page is no where to be found…

Anyways, the point is to use Google Webmaster Tools if you want to be ranked up high in Google search results!

Endless Google Search Results

I was browsing through a fellow UW undergrad’s blog when I stumbled upon his “Endless Google Search”.

The first thing that went through my mind as I was using it was, “Holy shit. This is awesome.” This just comes to prove that opening up API’s is a really good thing for the world. It allows creative programmers such as Paul (his blog here) the tools and resources to building something as ingenious as his “Endless Google Search.”

Basically, Paul used one of Google’s API’s to create his own search tool, one that uses the Google Search Engine but lists the results in such a way that you don’t need to click on any link to see more results. The mod uses AJAX to load search results, which allows you to simply scroll down to view more. This is a great tool if you are doing research!

Check his tool out here

However, as someone mentioned in the comments for the post, the ‘endlessness’ of the page may incur depression in some people…LET THIS BE A WARNING TO THE WEAK-MINDED

Operating System Woes (Vista vs Ubuntu)

Just an update on my operating system problem, I had installed Ubuntu over Vista since I was fed up with it self-destructing (who knows when it will do it again).

Ubuntu is currently the most popular Linux distribution out there and I had always loved it. After spending countless hours (2 days straight FYI) configuring and setting up the system to get it to feel and work exactly the way I want, the system was waiting for a priority upgrade. So, this is when I was reminded why I had quit Ubuntu before. When I upgraded my system, everything went kaput. I had to re-install EVERYTHING, but since I prefer the operating system over Windows any day, I reinstalled it again. Got everything working again, then I decided to neglect the priority upgrade and upgraded my hardware drivers. Then, kaput! AGAIN. This time my sound card went dead. This was the last draw. Ironically, I installed Vista over Ubuntu and am re-doing my configurations on that.

Ubuntu is truly remarkable if you haven’t used it before. You can see an example here:

I really think that Ubuntu has a chance to go mainstream, but before that, it has to have better hardware support and a more stable upgrading process (one that doesn’t involve constant destruction to the system files), not to mention more support for 64-bit systems.

All in all,  I have wasted a lot of time on computers lately, mainly trying to get them to work the way they should. I am even starting to feel a bit annoyed with them…oh noes! My nerdy side is slowly diminishing! (the fact that I just said that proves to be on the contrary).
