ADD – Do we all have it?

I came across an article from Wired magazine today that explains how ADD is becoming the”official brain syndrome of the information age.” Ironically, while reading the article I had about a dozen distractions and a burning desire to stop reading and send off an email or two.

Could we all have ADD?

Yes. It’s entirely possible that ADD is simply an evolution of the mind to access and decipher the plethora of information that bombards our daily routine. We are born in an age where stimulation is freely accessibly. We have the Internet to stimulate us when we’re bored, and we have TV to stimulate us when we’re bored of the Internet, and we have homework to stimulate us when we’re bored of both, although the latter is sometimes compulsory. This extreme load of stimulation applied throughout our lives keeps us constantly busy and when we run into situations where our minds have to sit in one place, we feel the urge to do more. It doesn’t even matter what it is. We just want to keep ourselves busy.

Here’s the article again: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.06/interrupt-driven_pr.html
What do you think? Do we all have ADD? Or is it just Waterloo students? :)

A Taste of Luxury and Success at a VIP Event

About a week ago, I received a private invitation from Dave Howlett to attend his VIP Knocking Down Silos keynote. Only about 75 high-profile executives and managers were invited to the keynote, so I was a bit taken back when I was invited. He took a liking to my online advertising startup, Influenza Media and asked me if I needed any help with my business. Now, what a nice guy. He has no obligations to help me as a stranger but he did anyways. And so you know, I need tons of help in finding clients for my business.

So I went, and got a taste of what being rich and powerful felt like:

1) Open bar with all kinds of drinks you can think of, plus top-notch wine.

2) Free food – free ridiculously good food that I can’t even try to pronounce (except for crab salads…mmm).

3) Mingling in a sea of poker/business-faces with equally eluding laughs and chatter.

4) Forming of cliques, categorized by level of influence, fame and job position.

What a world eh?

Welcome to the ‘Real World’ Kids

My economics teacher in high-school told me something that I would never forget. He said, “You haven’t seen the real world yet kids. You’ll get a closer look when you go through University, but you won’t know how the world really works until you start your career.”

Being the cocky high-school student I was, I had thought I understood what he really meant but it wasn’t until I stepped out of my bubble and started meeting with ambitious and hyper-intelligent over-achievers that I’ve noticed there are so few sincere individuals in the world.

I won’t name the specific incidences since I actually have readers of this blog (surprise!) and don’t want to create unnecessary commotion, but people always judge others based on credentials, age, sex, ethnicity and act accordingly to those judgments. That’s fine – it’s part of the evolution of the human mind, but what is not fine is when you are rude to those below you and kiss the asses of those above you. Time and time again I see this around me and even experience it myself. And starting my own online advertising company has especially put me in the lowest of the lowest position since those around me have already made a career for themselves; they are rich; they have connections; they have decades of experience. Me? I’m an undergrad who’s building a startup with no experience whatsoever. What makes me even more upset is the fact that I can already spot people around my age starting to become the kinds of people I mentioned above.

When I build a more successful startup with my own bare hands, when I become richer than they are, when I build more connections, and when I have more experience than them I will tell them from a pedestal that they should treat everyone equally and with sincerity and respect. Then they will listen.

Complete List of Web Directories

If you have just finished building your corporate website, submitting your website to online directories may increase your ranking on search engines and generate more page landings.

See the huge list of web directories here: http://www.definiteweb.com/list-of-directories2.htm

There are TONS of directories in that list. However, I only recommend submitting to the major ones, especially the popular search engines:

1) Google – http://www.google.com/addurl/

2) Yahoo – https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

3) MSN Live – http://search.live.com/docs/submit.aspx

4) Open Directory – http://www.dmoz.org

You should also invest in submitting your website into the Yahoo! Directory. It will cost you $299USD but it’s well worth it! It’s the YellowBook of the internet! Since we’re on the topic, make sure to submit your business in local business directories as well. YellowBook is a must considering it’s popular and FREE.

My Video Interview for Univ. of Waterloo President David Johnston

I have been putting off this blog entry for a while now (over 2 weeks…) and I was going to put it off for tomorrow…but it’ll just end up never being done.

About a month ago, I received an email asking for my appearance on a video about Velocity for UW President David Johnston’s presentation at the Canadian Telecom Summit. As the director of Velocity told me, “The Summit is the highest profile telecom conference in the
country.”

Naturally, I was pretty excited since it’s the first video interview I’ve had relating to my online advertising startup – Influenza Media.

FREE Government Seminar Listings for Small Business

Starting a business requires tons of work. A huge part of that work is doing the research and reading required to run your business “legally.”

Things like PST, Payrol deductions, Corporate taxes and ways to increase tax credits can be a headache. Luckily, the Canadian government supplies free seminars covering most topics on starting and maintaining your business. Check out their list of seminars here: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/vnts/on/menu-eng.html

Save $200 dollars off Quickbooks Premier

$200 dollars off Quickbooks

Yes! Today, I finally got a chance to get back at companies that outsource their call centers.

I purchased Quickbooks Pro 2008 for my startup company – Influenza Media with the assumption that it will support multi-currencies just like ALL previous versions. Sadly, I found out that it only supports CDN currency when I got home.

I gave Quickbooks a call and asked about their “upgrade service”. Long story short, they asked for another $200 dollars to “upgrade” my Pro version to a Multicurrency version, which makes the total sum up to ~$400 dollars. That’s fine because they had told me that I could keep the Pro software…which means I can just return it back to Best Buy (where I bought the software) and get my full money back!

What costs $400 dollars – I got for $200 all from “upgrading” my software.

In your face India!

Yoga is the Most Tiring Activity I’ve Done in Over 5 Years

After exams were finished, I quickly scouted out activities that would relax me a bit. I’ve been getting some crazy pain down my lower back and thought I should take it easy for a few days (before my business starts).

My girlfriend just started doing something called Hot Yoga and after some thinking I decided to try it out for a week.

Hot yoga simply involves doing traditional yoga but in a very hot room. Kind of like a sauna but not that intense.

It was definitely tiring and the heat didn’t help either, but that’s the point. The activity helps your body detoxify the toxins that are in your pores while balancing the 3 attributes of your body: strength, flexibility and balance.

It helped in keeping me relaxed but it did little for my back-pain (which it’s suppose to help). In fact, it made the pain worse…

If you want a good workout and are in the Thornhill area – checkout Yoga Tree (http://www.yogatree.ca).

Cheers,

Rewiring Your Brain – How I started walking funny

When I was young, I read a lot. I mean A LOT. My mother made daily visits to the library when I was young, and naturally my brother and I would tag along. I’ve read all the books in the kid’s science section and half of the books in the adult’s science section. I love to learn, and books are just another method of doing so.

What does this have to do with this post? Well, when you learn about the mechanics of something that is intrinsically human (such as walking), it can really mess up those mechanics if you pay enough attention.

In my high school years, I took an interest in the mechanics of walking after watching an episode of Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel (my favorite channel btw). I learned about how we walk and the mechanics of walking. I also learned the roles that bones, muscles, tendons and joints play while you walk. I’ve even carefully studied a 15-sec video of a person walking for hours straight.

Soon enough, the mechanics of walking was constantly on my mind. It became so obsessive that I would analyze the movement of each step I took as I walked. And because I had thought that a reversed-pendulum (it’s the way you move your legs) was a funny concept , I began experimenting with different “ways of walking.” Just for kicks, an example would be to lift your legs with the heel of your foot and to land on your toes instead of lifting with your toes and landing on your heels.

After a while, I started walking abnormally because so much was going through my head as I walked. I had to consciously think about walking in order to walk without looking like an idiot. This lasted for about 3 years…

In a way, I overrided parts of my mind that should be so natural and intrinsic to a human-being that it shouldn’t take any thought to perform.

You can read more about the basics of walking here: http://www.rubberbug.com/walking.htm – just try not to think about it too much while you’re walking ;)

So Many Web Designers, But So Few Talent

I am looking around for a web designer right now to develop my online advertising corporate website (InfluenzaMedia.com), and have posted on popular freelance websites such as Elance.com or Guru.com.

I’ve gotten over 30+ bids for the projected – all with reasonable quotes. However, I have noticed that out of the 30 something companies I looked at, only about 2 or 3 produce decent websites. Most of them claim to be web designers, but I don’t see any design in their work. They all look like cookie-cutters to me…

Maybe Guru.com or Elance.com isn’t the right place to look for talent, despite so many articles proclaiming that they are the prime place to look for online services…

Website Design Update – Background Concept

A little over a month ago, I had said that there would be some design changes for the website.

Now, it’s here!

Every month or so, I will be changing the background image to something that I have drawn. I call this the blackboard background design (BBD for short ;) )
